If you’ve been curious about the Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) certification but aren’t sure what to expect, this post is for you. Whether you're a builder, remodeler, designer, or occupational therapist, the CAPS program is designed to equip you with practical knowledge and real-world tools to better serve older adults who want to remain safely in their homes.
Let’s break down exactly what is covered in CAPS certification—and how each module builds on the last to give you a complete, career-boosting skillset.

CAPS I: Marketing & Communicating with the Aging-in-Place Client
This first course focuses on the human side of the business—how to communicate effectively, ethically, and compassionately with aging clients and their families.
You’ll learn how to:
Understand your client’s current and future needs
Navigate sensitive conversations around health and independence
Build trust with both clients and their caregivers
Align your services with aging-in-place goals
CAPS I is about learning to see the full picture—beyond the home, into the lives of the people who live there.
CAPS II: Design Concepts for Livable Homes and Aging in Place
Now that you understand the client’s needs, CAPS II shifts into design and layout. You’ll explore how to turn insights into action with universal design principles that support safety, mobility, and dignity.
Key concepts include:
Hallway and doorway dimensions
Lighting strategies to reduce fall risks
Product selections for accessible kitchens and bathrooms
Entry and exit modifications
Grab bars, flooring, cabinet solutions, and more
This course gives you the vocabulary and technical knowledge to collaborate confidently with contractors, therapists, and clients.
CAPS III: Details & Solutions for Livable Homes and Aging in Place
In the final course, you’ll take your knowledge into real-world application. Through case studies, floor plan reviews, and home evaluations, CAPS III ties everything together.
You’ll practice:
Evaluating home layouts for risk and accessibility
Creating action plans based on different client scenarios
Applying safety, comfort, and style in equal measure
Presenting your findings and recommendations to clients
“This course gave me the tools I didn’t know I needed. Now, I can walk into a home and immediately see opportunities to improve safety and quality of life.”— CAPS Grad
